Abbey Lighting

Romsey Abbey is a busy parish church and an important concert venue for the area, as well as hosting exhibitions and civic occasions. Most of the electricity in the Abbey is used by about 80 old high-level power-hungry halogen spotlights. We are planning to replace the spotlights with modern LEDs that are expected to use 75% less power, last longer and offer better control and lighting effects.

What we have already done

LED for small lights in aisles.

Programming of controls to light areas of the Abbey in use (although safety requires some lighting in all areas)

12 concert lights (for lighting the "stage" area now use LED lamps.

Commissioned a study of our lighting options.

What we plan to do

Continue to replace spotlights with LEDs. Halogen lights each use 650 watts whereas new LEDs would use 170 watts each.

Install a new control system which will improve flexibility and possibly also enhance dimming effects and use of colour.

Next steps

Options study taking place in January 2026.
